University of Manitoba Manure Test Lab Soon to be Operational
Dr. Qiang Zhang - University of Manitoba
Farmscape for July 3, 2001 (Episode 714) A new laboratory scale manure testing facility will soon be operating at the University of Manitoba. The new manure testing laboratory, which is being built on the campus of the University of Manitoba, will be used to study manure under a controlled environment. Dr. Qiang Zhang says, although there are no projects lined up yet, researchers will be in a position to evaluate newly introduced technology which has potential for reducing odor or changing the property of manure. He says scientists will be able to set up tests or experiments to evaluate these technologies in a controlled environment. Clip-Dr. Qiang Zhang-University of Manitoba There's a lot of things affects manure or odor and, if you don't have a controlled environment, it's very difficult to find out which one affects what and this controlled facility actually gives us that kind of control. We can actually put a small amount of manure in a controlled environment and we can manipulate manure, then put in pit additives or different treatment methods like control oxygen intake, things like that. Then we can actually measure the property of manure and also we can measure the gas emissions from the storage. We are probably two thirds finished. We have all the building built and we have all the equipment ordered. We're just in the last phase, putting everything together, putting all the pipes together, putting all the tubings together. The new lab facility is being built by the University's Biosystems Engineering Department with funding provided by the Manitoba Livestock Manure Management Initiative and it will consist of a small mobile trailer type building. Dr. Zhang says the lab will be capable of simulating different manure storage systems, similar to storages in the environment. He expects the project to be complete within the next month.
