Ability to Motivate Key to Attracting and Retaining Good Employees
Eric Spell - AgCareers.com

Farmscape for November 19, 2015

The president of AgCareers.com says the ability of employers to motivate and develop their employees will play a key role in their ability to attract and retain workers.
"Building a Great Farm Team" was among the topics discussed yesterday as part of Saskatchewan Pork Industry 2015 in Saskatoon.
Eric Spell, the president of AgCareers.com, says, if you want to have a high degree of productivity and profitability within an organization it's all about the people and the ability to motivate those people makes all the difference.

Clip-Eric Spell-AgCareers.com:
One of the things that we, as leaders, need to understand ourselves is are we ourselves motivated.
Are there factors in our lives or at work that are demotivating us?
If so that's going to directly impact our daily or weekly life at work so, first as a leader, we need to understand if we're motivated or demotivated ourselves.
Then we need to understand the individuals within the team.
Are there individuals within the team that are demotivated?
If so why?
We need to cope with that.
Sometimes that's a matter of showing compassion or caring or it could be providing training and tools to do the job.
I was told early in my career, to be an effective leader, you want to be seen as a developer of people.
Those of us who have got years of experience, you always remember the coaches, the teachers and the leaders that had positive influences on your life so, as a leader, if you develop a habit and a history of developing people and developing other leaders, people are going to come and want to work for you.
You're not going to have to worry about staff leaving because chances are you'll get high quality staff to develop and grow.

Spell says the job of the leader of a team that is demotivated is to find out why and move that team to a state where its members can be motivated.
For Farmscape.Ca, I'm Bruce Cochrane.
