Canada's Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food has reaffirmed Canada's commitment to revitalizing rural areas, increasing farm income, improving agricultural sustainability and reducing agriculture's environmental footprint.
On the weekend Canada's Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food represented Canada at the G7 Agriculture Minister's Meeting in Japan.
Lawrence MacAulay says the Government of Canada strongly supports free trade to encourage investment, open markets and job creation and will continue to showcase Canada to the world as a reliable supplier of high-quality and safe agriculture and food products, to gain new market opportunities and ensure a prosperous Canadian agricultural sector.

Clip-Lawrence MacAulay-Canada-Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food:
We looked at ways to sustainably feed a growing population sustainably.
Agriculture ministers exchanged ideas to respond to the challenges and opportunities agriculture faces in our respective countries and around the world.
We agreed that member countries need to take action included in the implementation of the 2030 agenda on sustainable development and the Paris agreement on climate change.
At the G7 meetings in Japan G7 countries agreed to work together to increase global farm income, innovate to increase productivity and reduce agricultural environmental footprint.
One of the greatest benefits of the meeting was a chance to compare our policies, challenges and solutions.
I shared Canada's approach focusing on science and innovation, trade and the environment.
I apprised ministers of some of the great work that's going on in Canada to develop new crops and new technologies to meet the demands of a growing population with a reduced environmental footprint.

MacAulay says the general consensus among G7 ministers is that much of the poverty is among the world's poor farmers and there is a recognition of the need to increase farm income while improving sustainability, production and productivity.
