U.S. Truck Washes Pose Greater PED Risk than U.S. Swine Farms
Florian Possberg - Saskatchewan Pork Development Board

Farmscape for June 16, 2016

The Chair of Sask Pork says Canadian swine transport vehicles are much more likely to become contaminated with PED at dirty U.S. truck washes than they are at clean U.S. farms.
Three Manitoba swine farms have been confirmed infected with Porcine Epidemic Diarrhea since the Canadian Food Inspection Agency began enforcing regulations May 1 requiring swine transports returning from U.S. farms to be washed in the U.S.
Saskatchewan Pork Development Board Chair Florian Possberg says, when we take trailers to clean farms then send them to dirty truck washes, we're putting our whole industry at risk and now we have a number of cases that demonstrate that.

Clip-Florian Possberg-Saskatchewan Pork Development Board:
The washes in the U.S. are in high dense pig areas.
They don't have the level of sanitation and protocol necessary to get rid of really tough bugs like PED and we actually many times increase our risk of bringing disease back into Canada by contaminating these trailers and equipment in dirty washes in the U.S.
These truck washes in the U.S., typically you're spreading infection in every nook and cranny of trailers, on top of trailers, into the running gear, underneath the trailers, into the cab and really infecting your whole unit.
The level of sanitation, even though it's really good here in our Canadian washes, it's really difficult to clean up a mess that's created by poor regulations and we'll continue to lobby to get this changed because we know it's putting our industry at risk and it's just not acceptable.
We risk millions of dollars and piles of dead pigs by having poor regulations.

Possberg says when he sees pictures of four or five foot high piles of dead baby pigs it's really upsetting and he can't understand why we don't do a better job of protecting our industry.
