Saskatchewan Crop Yields Up Across All Regions for Most Crops
Daphne Cruise - Saskatchewan Ministry of Agriculture

Farmscape for August 22, 2016

Saskatchewan Agriculture reports most producers are indicating yields will be above the five to ten year average across all crops, with the exception of lentils and chickpeas.
As of last week Saskatchewan's 2016 harvest was averaging 3 percent complete, on par with the 5 year average.
Daphne Cruise, a Cropping Management Specialist with Saskatchewan Agriculture, says most producers have indicated the majority crops will be above the 5 to 10 year average with the exception of lentils and some chickpeas which, given this year's wet conditions, isn't a surprise.

Clip-Daphne Cruise-Saskatchewan Agriculture:
As far as the quality goes, with the winter cereals that are coming off, it sounds like for the most part quality is pretty good.
We haven't got an indication of what kind of percentages are falling in what grade classes yet but, hopefully in the next couple of weeks, we will be able to determine those numbers.
When it comes to the rest of the crops, it sound like anywhere from a 5 to 8 bushel increase over the average.
Right now our producers are indicating canola up 5 bushels to the acre, spring wheat as well up 5, durum and peas up 7 bushels.
That's a good news story but time will tell as we get closer and more crop into the bin.
When it comes to the lentil crop, our provincial average for 5 and 10 years is about 22 bushels.
A lot of producers in the prime lentil growing territory are used to higher yields than that, of sometimes 30 to 35 bushels and our 2016 prediction, our producers are indicating about 20 bushels on average across the entire province.
There are some exceptions there.
When we look to the southwest and the west central areas where the majority of our lentils are grown, or a good portion of them are, depending on where the rain fell and what kind of soil conditions those crops are on, anywhere from 5 bushels to 22 bushels is predicted for those areas with an average of around 12 in the west central region.

Cruise says, not a good story when it comes to lentil crops on that side of the province but, that being said, there are some high yields predicted in many other areas.
