Manitoba Crops Looking Good Fall Seeded Cereal Harvest Getting Underway
Anne Kirk - Manitoba Agriculture

Farmscape for July 26, 2017

Manitoba Agriculture reports, for the most part, crops across the province are looking good with few signs of disease or insect damage.
Manitoba Agriculture released its weekly crop report Monday.
Anne Kirk, a Cereal Crop Specialist with Manitoba Agriculture, says thunderstorms resulted in damage in some part of the province this past week and areas of the Southwest, Northwest and Central regions could use rain but the majority of crop are looking good.

Clip-Anne Kirk-Manitoba Agriculture:
Crop development has been advancing very quickly with all of the hot and humid weather that we've seen across the province in the last couple of weeks.
Winter cereals and some early seeded spring seeded cereals are starting to turn.
Canola is finishing flowering and podding in many areas and corn is starting to tassel and soybeans and peas are podding.
Moisture will likely be a big factor in terms of yield potential this season.
It's been pretty variable throughout the province.
In some areas of the Southwest, Central and Northwest regions conditions have been fairly dry so I would imagine that it would be the determining factor for yield in those areas.
Into other areas of the province that have received more adequate levels of moisture, were seeing pretty good crop conditions.
We haven't seen a lot of disease or insect activity in crops this year.
In a few different areas of Manitoba last week there were thunderstorms and large storms that brought damaging winds and hail.
That was probably the big weather story for last week, with really strong winds knocking over trees, causing some lodging in crops and then hail causing some minor damage in crops as well.
That was sort of scattered throughout the province last week.

Kirk says the winter cereal harvest will be starting any day now.
She says we have heard reports of some swathing of fall rye and indications are that winter wheat will be ready to harvest in some areas this week.
