Swine Health Information Center Introduces Near Real Time Domestic Swine Disease Monitoring System
Dr. Paul Sundberg - Swine Health Information Center

Farmscape for October 24, 2017

The Swine Health Information Center has introduced a Near Real Time Domestic Swine Disease Monitoring System.
In partnership with the Swine Health Information Center the University of Minnesota and Iowa State University, the two primary veterinary diagnostic labs for swine disease in the United States, have developed a Near Real Time Domestic Swine Disease Monitoring System.
Dr. Paul Sundberg, the Executive Director of the Swine Health Center, says the system is being established now and should be in operation within the next couple of months.

Clip-Dr. Paul Sundberg-Swine Health Information Center:
This is the next step following our Veterinary Diagnostic Lab Data Standardization Project.
That's a project that involves the University of Minnesota. Iowa State University, Kansas State University and South Dakota State University and they get about 96 plus percent of the swine diagnostics in the country.
That project is about to come to a successful close.
What that project has done is standardize the way that those laboratories record and report the results of their diagnostic tests.
This project is then going to take advantage of that standardization.
It will develop a way to automatically tap into the data that is going to be available from the university diagnostic labs so we can help compile that data and make it available for analysis.
It's a really important step in providing up to date very close to real time swine health information on how things are changing around the country and what producers can expect in different areas of the country.

Dr. Sundberg says the target audience is the producer and the veterinarian and the goal is to make the information available to them so they can make informed real time decisions about animal movement, biosecurity practices and how they manage the pigs on their farms.
For Farmscape.Ca, I'm Bruce Cochrane.
