Legislation Introduced to Implement Made in Manitoba Climate and Green Plan
Rochelle Squires - Sustainable Development Minister Manitoba

Farmscape for March 16, 2018

The Government of Manitoba has introduced new legislation that will implement the "Made in Manitoba Climate and Green Plan."
The climate and green plan implementation act, introduced yesterday, contains five separate acts that would cover specific environment and economic areas and includes a new climate and green plan act to replace the Climate Change and Emissions Reduction Act and the Sustainable Development Act, a new industrial greenhouse-gas emissions control and reporting act, and amendments to the Water Protection Act, the Income Tax Act and the Fuel Tax Act.
Sustainable Development Minister Rochelle Squires says the goal is to reduce carbon emissions, keep jobs in Manitoba and stimulate innovative and clean energy, and the province will be working with all agricultural producers to help them reduce their carbon footprint and transition to the low carbon future.

Clip-Rochelle Squires-Sustainable Development Minister Manitoba:
We do believe that agriculture producers have been good stewards of the land for many centuries and that they will continue to be good stewards of the land for centuries to come.
They have already invested significantly in adapting to climate change with a lot of their investments in their technology and their equipment and they're prepared to do their part in helping us transition to the low carbon future.
We will be working with our federal partners in the near future to establish some shared priorities.
As you know on February 28 I signed on to the Pan-Canadian Framework for Climate Change with our federal minister and that entitled us to a 67 million dollar low carbon economy fund.
We're looking at priorities of mutual interest that we can agree upon to move forward and I look forward to making those announcements in the very near future.

Squires says the government is moving forward with a comprehensive, realistic and workable climate and green plan with a bold new future for a clean, green Manitoba.
