World Pork Expo to Highlight Pork Check0ff Funded Activities
Cindy Cunningham - National Pork Board

Farmscape for May 30, 2018

Pork Producers attending the 2018 edition of World Pork Expo will have an opportunity to learn the latest about what's being done on their behalf through the Pork Checkoff.
The Pork Checkoff is one the main sponsors of the 2018 edition of World pork Expo, slated for June 6, 7 and 8 at the Iowa State Fairgrounds in Des Moines.
Cindy Cunningham, the Assistant Vice-President of Communications with the National Pork Board, explains the Pork Checkoff is a vehicle through which American pork producers invest in their industry in product promotion, research and consumer education.

Clip-Cindy Cunningham-National Pork Board:
The Pork Checkoff is actually a fee that is collected from all pork producers in the U.S. when they market a hog or from any pig or pork products that are brought in to the U.S. and that money is used for research, promotion and education.
Examples of research would be farm level research that producers can put into practice on their own farms so looking at things like disease management or animal care practices or nutrition and how producers can always continuously improve the care that they are giving to each individual pig on their farm.
That's the research aspect of it.
The education aspect of it is making sure that producers have access to that research that is then done and can be carried to the farm level.
The consumer information and consumer education, promotion side of it is working to help folks understand how pork fits into a healthy diet, how they can prepare pork and cook it to 145 degrees so they can have that best eating experience.

Cunningham notes an estimated 25 thousand visitors from 50 countries across the globe will be passing through World Pork Expo.
She says the event provides a great opportunity for producers to interact and network and take home a better understanding of the pork industry.
